How To Find Hope During Eating Disorder Recovery
Whether you’re new to eating disorder recovery, have been in it for a while, or returning to it after taking a break, it can feel like a lot. It can feel overwhelming, lonely, and at times, endless. An eating disorder does a great job of convincing us that recovery isn’t possible or that it’s some far off and distant reality–something that’s maybe reserved for others but not for you. After all, your eating disorder has convinced you that you’re “special” or “the exception”, right? But hope is possible. Hope is something that you can build, nurture and return to again and again.
When trying to connect to hope, start small. Pay attention to your “little victories”. Acknowledge even what seem to be the tiniest of steps: finishing a meal, reaching out for support, challenging a negative thought. Your eating disorder may make it seem like you have to be perfect, but small moments matter and can create change, little bit by little bit.
Connecting to hope feels a lot more doable when you’re not doing it alone. Whether it’s a therapist, a support group, trusted friends, or family members, having people who believe in your recovery can help you believe in it too. Their hope can hold you up on days when yours feels shaky.
In challenging moments, reconnect to your “why”. Why did you choose recovery? Was it to feel free? To have energy for the things you love? To build meaningful relationships? When recovery feels hard, return to these reasons. They are what anchor you to this process.
Hope lives in the future, so allow yourself to imagine a future without the eating disorder noise. What would you do? Who would you be? Even if the vision feels far away, imagining it plants a seed.
Your eating disorder is going to do an incredible job of convincing you that recovery isn’t possible. But healing is possible and you are absolutely capable of it. Recovery isn’t linear and it certainly isn’t going to be easy, but you are worthy of the life waiting for you beyond the challenge.
