What Should I Do When I’m Feeling Off?
We all have those times when life feels a little off-like you’re moving through the motions but not fully connected to yourself. Maybe you’re tired, overwhelmed, or just not feeling quite like you. When that happens, it can be hard to know where to start. It helps to come back to a few key areas that can help you feel a bit more grounded and balanced. In this post, we’ll explore strategies in four categories that can help support your mental health: brain, body, spirit, and creativity. Try to incorporate one activity from each category throughout your week and notice how it feels.
Brain: learn a new skill, start learning a new language, watch a documentary, read a nonfiction book or article, do a puzzle or word search, complete a challenging task
Body: engage in movement that feels good, put on lotion, use a special body wash or soap, stretch, rest/take a nap, get a massage, make sure you’re eating and hydrating adequately, paint your nails, take a shower/bath
Spirit: spend time with a good friend, be out in nature, watch your favorite movie or show, listen to nostalgic music, eat your favorite comfort meal or snack, snuggle with a pet, give a loved one a hug, go for a drive, donate time or money to a cause that matters to you, watch a thunderstorm, listen to the birds
Creativity: explore a new type of music or new artist, go to a local museum or art display, paint/draw/sculpt, garden, dance, sing, write, redecorate an area of your space, go thrifting
These are some ideas to get you brainstorming; what would you add to each category for yourself? Keep in mind that each strategy might fall into multiple categories depending on how they impact you! We often spend a lot of our time in the brain and body categories but balancing our days or weeks out with spirit and creativity can be a helpful step towards feeling more connected to our lives.
